Frequently asked questions about Binding Toys
There are three main types of handcuffs:
Plush and fabric cuffs
Soft-lined with plush, satin, or neoprene. Ideal for beginners — comfortable with no pressure points. Usually secured with Velcro or a simple buckle.
Leather cuffs
Sturdy and durable, often adjustable with a buckle or snap buttons. Offer more resistance than plush cuffs, suitable for experienced users.
Metal handcuffs
The classic police-style model. Visually exciting but not recommended for beginners — metal can press on wrist joints and nerves during heavy pulling. If you choose metal cuffs, ensure they have a safety key and a quick-release mechanism.
Regardless of type, always agree on a safe word and keep the key or release mechanism within reach.
Safety comes first when using handcuffs:
- Agree on a safe word — the traffic light system (green/yellow/red) is simple and effective
- Check the fit — you should always be able to fit a finger between the cuff and the skin. Too tight restricts blood circulation
- Never bind around the neck — only wrists or ankles
- Keep the key within reach — not in another room
- Watch for tingling or discolouration — cold, blue, or tingling fingers mean the cuffs are too tight. Release immediately
- Never leave your partner alone while restrained
- Aftercare — gently rub the wrists after removal to restore circulation. The SSC principle (Safe, Sane, Consensual) applies throughout
The difference lies in how the cuffs open:
Key lock:
- Classic and visually exciting
- Requires a physical key to open
- Downside: if you lose the key, you have a problem. Always buy a model with two keys
Quick-release:
- Opens with a button press or simple hand movement
- The restrained partner can free themselves if needed
- Safer, especially for beginners and solo play
- Available in Velcro, snap button, or magnetic closure versions
For beginners, we always recommend quick-release closures. They give both partners a greater sense of safety and align with the SSC principle.
Maintenance depends on the material:
Plush and fabric:
- Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild soap
- Air dry — never use a tumble dryer
Leather:
- Wipe with a slightly damp cloth after each use
- Treat periodically with leather balm to keep the material supple
- Store in a dry place, away from direct sunlight
Metal:
- Clean with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly to prevent rust
- Occasionally apply a small drop of oil to the lock mechanism
- Regularly check that the lock operates smoothly — a jamming lock is a safety risk
Always store handcuffs separately from other toys to prevent material reactions.
